London touts business link to Olympics

London yesterday launched a week-long campaign at the Expo, hoping to "drum up potential business opportunities and to persuade Expo visitors and exhibitors to participate in the 2012 London Olympic Games."

Richard Barnes, deputy mayor of London, said officials would "pick up tips on staging major international events" from the Expo and share with visitors London's efforts to come up with the greenest Olympics ever.

Being a leader in low-carbon emission projects, the British capital has shown its zeal for a greener life by building a ZED pavilion at the Expo site. A copy of the world's first zero carbon emission community, the Beddington community, the ZED pavilion itself produces the energy the building needs.

Apart from the buildings, London also plans to move away its public transport system from being a guzzler of fossil energy like gas.

London will kick off a campaign next week back in the United Kingdom to encourage people to use bicycles by offering bikes on rent and building more fast bike routes.

"The development of electric vehicles and cars powered by hydrogen technologies will also be our focus," according to Peter Bishop, deputy chief executive of London Development Agency.

London will hold a reception to mark the two-year countdown to the 2012 Olympic Games at the UK Pavilion tonight.
