The Pavilion of Global Environment Facility (GEF) today celebrated its Pavilion Honor Day at the Expo Center this afternoon.
GEF attaches great importance with China and the two side have witnessed good cooperation by establishing many influential environmental-protection-related programs in combating climate change, protecting biodiversity, ensuring food supply and reducing the use of insecticide, said Monique Barbut, Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of GEF.
The Chinese government works hard to achieve sustainable development and GEF hopes to further strengthen the cooperation with China in environmental field, Barbut said.
Zhu Guangyao, China's Vice Minister of Finance, said GEF has made great contributions in environmental protection by funding developing countries, developing and implementing projects regarding eco-protection and promoting international cooperation over the years. GEF dedicates to the promotion of advanced environmental protection technologies and management system and the sustainable development of population, resources and environment.
GEF provides grants for projects related to such areas as climate change, biodiversity, international waters and the ozone layer with a view to improving global environment and promoting sustainable development.
The pavilion is a high-tech glass-and-steel structure, illuminated by landscape lamps and decorated by murals from across the world, combining traditional arts and modern technologies. A stream of water runs through a cone hung from the wood-and-brass vault and flows into a glass shell, indicating the significant role of rainwater in world ecological balance.
