El Salvador celebrates Pavilion Day

El Salvador, the "country of volcanoes," celebrates its National Pavilion Day today with an eruption of color, music and dance.

The 2010 Expo is a grand event blending traditional culture and modern civilization, which is a landmark in World Expositions' history, Othon Sigfrido Reyes Morales, vice president of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, said at this morning's official ceremony at the Expo Center.

Wang Jinzhen, vice chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, said he believed the El Salvador Pavilion would be a highlight of the Expo.

A "flame" spewing volcano rises in the middle of the El Salvador Pavilion, which is themed "Country of Volcanoes" and showcases uses of geothermal energy.

Screens feature the country's spectacular volcanic landscape, arts and culture and use of rich geothermal and hydroelectric resources to create better cities.

It is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America.

The central "volcano" is a huge steel structure with moving, flame-, lava- and smoke-colored membranes - and a chandelier in the center providing molten, erupting light.

The exhibition features pottery and textiles, their designs inherited from Mayan culture.

Visitors can buy high-quality coffee grown in volcanic soil.
