Bamboo Week advocates sustainable lifestyle

The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) launched the Bamboo Charcoal Week today to show the environmental and economic benefits of bamboo charcoal through interactive displays at the INBAR Pavilion.

Bamboo charcoal products from pillows, water and air purifiers, lamps, baskets to soaps and cosmetics are on exhibit. The event will end on August 16.

Chinese craftsmen from Suichang, Zhejiang Province, will demonstrate how to make bamboo charcoal products during the week. Suichang is famous for bamboo charcoal production.

Innovative products made of bamboo charcoal can provide good income for rural communities, especially farmers in poor mountainous areas. And the use of bamboo can also help protect the environment by providing a more sustainable and renewable alternative to timber or fossil-fuel based products, said Coosje Hoogendoorn, INBAR's director general.

Bamboo is one of the fast-growing plants on earth, and the interwoven nature of its roots plays an important role in preventing soil erosion, he said.
